Weekend Edit: The Last of Christmas Edition

hoka

Happy Monday, friends. I’m back today for another weekend edit. I love getting to recap my weekend on a Monday morning. It’s a nice way to kick off the start of the week. I officially feel like I’ve ripped the back-to-work Bandaid off, and we are well into January whether we want to be or not. We had a tremendously eventful weekend. I can’t say it was super restful, but we sure did get lots accomplished. We said goodbye to the last of the
Christmas season this weekend, and I’ve got a clean house that refreshed and renewed and ready for 2022.

peloton

I worked until about 6 on Friday. So, I got in a quick Peloton run, and Aaron and I did pizza night at the house. We also snuck in some planning for the year ahead, and friends, we’ve got some fun stuff on our plate. First up: we signed up to run the Nashville Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon in April. Which means, I need to hit the ground running this year…. literally. We also tried to watch a movie, but both of us fell asleep around 11. A real wild Friday night, folks.

Saturday

breakfast taco

Aaron grabbed us breakfast tacos from Luchi and Joey’s. If any of ya’ll live in Houston – they are a must try. Their sauce is spicy and delicious.

After that, I took the pups on a walk. When Aaron isn’t available to help me walk them, I’ve been taking each dog separately to work on their walking skills and to get some one on one time. Dogs – just like kids (haha, but seriously). The dog in the photo above it Tex after his walk.

And that’s my Cali. I was so glad I got them out because Houston would get some major rain later in the day (but more on that in a sec).

Christmas

I put all of my Christmas stuff away. It took hours. As in – I spent all of my day Saturday after the dog walk putting this stuff away. There also may or may not have been a deep clean of my house that I did after they were all put away. Regardless, I’m happy to have reclaimed my space – there’s just something about a fresh start to the year.

After I put that stuff away, I got in a quick strength workout, and then we were off to meet two friends for dinner. This time, we headed to Pico’s. And again, if you are in Houston, it’s one of mine and Aaron’s most favorite restaurants. They have fabulous food, and they are known for their mole sauces. I had the Mancha manteles, which has chicken and pork, in a fabulous mole with plantains, sweet potatoes, pineapples and apples. It sounds like a strange combination, but it’s absolutely delicious. I’ve talked about Picos on here before, so you know that their chocolate Tres Leches cake is my absolute favorite dessert. Sadly, they were out last night, so we took a dulce de Leche cheesecake slice to go.

We dropped our friends off around 10, and we were back to our house around 10:15. I let the dogs out, and Aaron and I had just gotten comfy on the couch, when the rain started. We are used to heavy rain in Houston, but this was kind of out of control. Shortly thereafter, we started receiving tornado warnings on our phones. So, I flipped on the news and logged into Twitter to see what was happening. Sure enough, our area was seeing some tornado activity about two miles away from our house. I stayed up until about 12:30 monitoring the storm, and making sure all of our drains were draining properly.

Sunday

ornament exchange

After 12:30, things started calming down a bit, so we made it to bed. I was up early on Sunday to grab some coffee before …… my annual ornament exchange and brunch with two of my besties. This time, we headed to Killen’s in the Heights for brunch. Now, I’ve done dinner there before, but not brunch. It was delicious and 10/10 would go back – even though I’m admittedly not the biggest breakfast person out there. That wooden Baylor ornament was a favorite, and this one was cute also:

It’s one of my favorite traditions each year – even if it has to happen in January because…. life. We sat and chatted for a good three hours before I headed back home.

cookies

When I got home, our friend was over with my husband. He was dropping off some cookies and some dinner!

Costco

After that, we popped over for a quick Costco run. Waterloo and breakfast protein sandwiches for the win. Those sandwiches are great if you need a quick fix of protein for breakfast and are running short on time. You pop them in the microwave for about 30-seconds each side.

hoka

And finally, I ended my Sunday night with a 30-minute peloton run. My husband gifted me with some Hoka running shoes this week. He’s been a Hoka fan for several years. But, I’ve always been a diehard Brooks Glycerin running shoes fan (IYKYK). I’ve run all of my races in Brooks Glycerins. But, they recently changed up the design a bit, and I don’t feel like I’m getting as much support as I felt like I needed to be increasing my mileage. Aaron thought I should at least give the Hoka’s a try. I will say that they have a larger surface area, so you feel like you have a bit more stability when you strike. I need to give them a real road test before I can make any definitive decisions. They were comfortable, and my feet feel great today.

And, that’s all I’ve got for today. An eventful weekend, and a three-day weekend right around the corner!
