Weekend wrap-up

Cornelius nursery

Happy Monday! I am back to regularly-scheduled programming around here. After losing our Sawyer, it goes without saying that I just wasn’t feeling like my old self, and I needed some time to fully wrap my head around losing him. I still remember him fondly every day, but I am in a much better mindset than I was two weeks ago.

That being said, I decided to take Friday off of work to have a little “me time.” It’s been awhile since I have a taken a full day off work where I shut email down completely and just have some time to do whatever the heck I want to do that doesn’t involve an errand on my list. So, here’s what I was up to for my three-day weekend. I’m back, and I feel better than ever.

Friday

I decided to go get my nails done – and a pedicure – for the first time in a year. There is just something super luxurious about having someone else do a better manicure than you could ever give yourself at home.

I needed to find a good place by our new house, and Mr. Simplywed is always down for a pedicure, so I booked us appointments for Friday morning. I popped a podcast in, sat in that massage chair for an hour – and let the ladies do their thing. It. Was. Fabulous. I actually really like the way the lady did my nails, and my feet feel like brand new. I feel like a whole new woman 🙂 I’ll be back. For those local to Houston, we went to Bora Bora Nails.

After that, we headed over to peruse Academy. I was in desperate need of some new workout clothes. I picked up some new running shorts!

After that, I headed home to work out, and I headed out to do some shopping and to grab a gift for my newly-engaged friend. We met my friend and her fiancé out for a celebration dinner to end Friday evening.

Saturday

We needed to finish our yard on Saturday, so we got an early start. We headed over to Cornelius Nursery, and they had so many great options to choose from. Now, I’ve never really considered myself a plant person until we bought a house. Now, I feel like it’s part of my responsibility as a homeowner to keep our plants alive and pretty. My husband does a great job at taking care of the grass – and he’s fairly in the know about the flowers/plants we have. So, I’m counting on him to teach me his ways.

We bought all the plants. We needed some hanging plants for the front and back, we needed some new vine plants, and I needed some plants for my blue pots that I bought for my front porch. The guy who helped me with fantastic. I showed him a photo of my pots, and I told him that they would be in full shade pretty much all day. I also needed something that was relatively easy to take care of, because I’m no expert. He recommends some Aucuba plants (those green and yellow plants on the bottom right), and they are so pretty. (They are also Baylor Bear colors – so you know I loved them).

As soon as we got home, we got to work planting these in the ground. I’m very pleased with the end result, and I’m really hoping we can keep these alive.

After all that work on Saturday, we met our friend out at a new (to us) bar with an outside patio for dinner!

Sunday

And then Sunday. We finally returned to church for our first in-person service in more than a year. If I’m being completely honest, we should have gone back to in person services awhile ago. But, it sure was nice to sleep in a bit and to watch church in my pjs. Virtual services and in person services just aren’t the same, and it sure was nice to be back.

Since Sawyer has passed away, our lab, Buttercup, has been noticeably depressed. She just isn’t herself. After talking to our vet and some other friends who have been in the same situation, we realized we needed to distract her a bit. We’ve been sticking to our routine of walking in the evening – and giving her toys throughout the day. But, it just hasn’t worked. Buttercup was the Alpha dog, and it was kind of her job (if you will) to watch Sawyer throughout the day. Now that he’s gone, she’s confused about what her place is – and she’s wondering why her friend is gone. So, we set her up a doggy playdate. We needed a dog that would be okay with Buttercup at first (she’s a super Alpha and can have aggressive tendencies), and once we let them meet in our backyard, they really warmed up to each other. Both dogs ended up in the pool, and for a little while yesterday, Buttercup was back to her old self.

And, while I’m not sure what this looks like for our family (both Aaron and I acknowledge that we are a two-dog family) just yet, we might consider adding another dog back into the mix. Emotionally, I’m not ready for that just yet for a variety of reasons, but I also realize it could be really good for Buttercup (and probably me to a certain extent). It would just have to be the right dog. So, stay tuned and have a fabulous week.
