Explore Your Own Backyard: Houston Rodeo

Happy Wednesday. I really hope that some of you are on a Spring Break. And, whether that means that you are having a staycation filled with relaxation – or traveling somewhere to make some new memories, I hope it’s everything you need it to be. One of the worst parts about adulting, is not having a spring break. March is really the perfect time to take some days off to relax and refresh yourself for those in between months until summer hits.

As for me? I’m in the busiest month of work (possibly this year), so I won’t be taking any time off until April. And trust me, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to schedule some time off several months in advance. It gives you something fun to look forward to. I have some fun things planned in March to help me persevere through this month. And, one of those fun things is the Houston Rodeo.

Houston Rodeo

I had never heard of the Rodeo until my freshman year at Baylor. Several of my close friends were from Houston, and they always talked about the Houston Rodeo. I didn’t fully understand the concept until I actually moved to Houston and got to experience it for myself.

Yes, it is a true rodeo with horses and bull riding, mutton busting and a calf scramble. And, it’s really neat to watch. The rodeo itself is always followed by a concert. And, over the years, they have brought in some big artists. Take a trip down memory lane with me!

Rodeo Houston

This was a photo taken at the Maren Morris Houston Rodeo show in 2020 several days before the whole world shut down due to the pandemic. The Rodeo was one of the first big events in Houston to close, and that’s when I kind of knew that our world as we knew it, was changing. Regardless, we had the best time at Maren and sang our hearts out. Anyone else a fan of Bones?

Now, I don’t remember the first rodeo I actually attended, but this was 2014. The three of us would always pick a concert and go beforehand to walk around, grab some rodeo eats and have ourselves a good time.

This was Luke Bryan one year. We had tickets four rows from the front. He decided to get off his stage, and everyone rushed the fence. The women were going crazy. It’s one of of my favorite rodeo memories.

Aaron and I used to try to go rodeo as much as we could. There was one year where we went once – sometimes even twice a week. We were kind of burned out after that 🙂 We try to reign it in these days.

One of my favorite rodeo events to watch is the chuck wagon races. There are three teams, and the crowd goes crazy. It’s really fun to watch if you are down in the action seats – and they are full of action. The dirt literally goes flying over you!

It’s a great place to grab a drink or two and enjoy some fun times with friends.

You can hit the wine garden before you head into the stadium for the show. I have done this lots of times. I’ll meet a friend there, we will share a bottle (or two) and head on inside for the fun.

My cousins from California came to visit one year, and we did the rodeo. I think we went several days in a row!

I can’t remember what show this was for, but my husband loves some good rodeo attire. I appreciate that he embraces the fun. See his leather vest? Haha.

But, my all time favorite Houston Rodeo show was Garth Brooks. He came to play in 2018, and tickets were hard to get. I think I sat in the virtual waiting room awhile before finally giving up. I ended up buying some tickets from a woman off of Next Door in the Action Seats (which have their own food service and bar), and they were worth every single penny. Garth put on the best show.

Rodeo Tips

If you are a first-time rodeo-goer, try to buy seats in the Action Section. They have their own food service and bar, and they are right up close to all of the action. You can see the full rodeo up close and personal.

Parking. Getting to the rodeo can be kind of a nightmare. I’ve done it all ways. I have ubered, I have taken the rail in, I have driven and parked in the parking lot and I’ve done the shuttles. I think the fastest way in and out are the shuttles. You pay $20 to park in a lot off site, and they shuttle you to and from the event. There is a bit of waiting at the end of the evening, but it’s worth it to not wait in a long line to Uber or get out of a parking lot.

The rodeo runs through March 20, so there is still plenty of time to go. You can visit this site to see the schedule and buy tickets. If you currently live in Houston and you’ve never been, you should definitely give it a try. It’s good for kids and adults of all ages!
