Home Organization: Kitchen and Laundry Room Edition

When Aaron and I first got married, things were super busy. I had just receive a promotion at work and started about two weeks before the wedding. We moved about a month before the wedding. And Aaron’s business was still relatively new, so he was working 24/7 (you can read more about what we both do for a living here). Throw a wedding (IN A DIFFERENT STATE) into the mix, and we really had no spare time.

Background

That being said, Aaron and I started our marriage off with multiple sets of kitchen items. We had two blenders, two sets of pots and pans, allllll the cups and multiple sets of dishware. You name it, and we probably had doubles. On top of that, we had registered for new dishware sets and my wedding china, so we were adding some new items into the mix. My mother-in-law came over to help me get organized and to add some items to our donate pile. But, Aaron and I didn’t want to part with some of our stuff at the time. We had plenty of cabinet space, so we just hung on to a lot of it. Mistake.

I’ve mentioned before that holding on to some of that physical stuff is silly, but it’s taken me a while to come to that conclusion. I moved to Texas when I was 17 and a freshman at Baylor University, and I didn’t know a soul. I lived in the dorm my freshman year, and moved into an apartment with roommates for my sophomore year. My parents sent me a bunch of stuff to get me started. And, those things had sentimental value to me because they really earmarked my independence and the start of adulthood. Fast forward to now – a full-blown adult – and I’ve had a difficult time parting with some of that. But you know, getting rid of some of that stuff doesn’t take away the memories. Organization is not necessarily a bad thing!

When we started packing for the move to our new house, we knew we really needed to donate some of those doubles and get organized. We have lots of storage space at the new house, but who wants to keep holding onto things they just don’t use? So, we went through and did some purging. And since then, I’ve gone through and have really done some organizing. Our house was built in the 60s, and it has undergone a huge renovation thanks to the previous owners.

Some organizational tools that have really helped in the kitchen and laundry area have been adding some pull-out drawers to the kitchen cabinets. We have three of this brand and are considering adding more, but we might not need them.

Laundry Room Organization

We didn’t have much of a pantry, so we did have to order a standalone cabinet. We ordered this one, and it fits right in with the existing decor. I’m pretty sure the owners had the exact same one, and we actually thought it was a built-in when we looked at the house.

It was gone when we did our final walk-through, so I hopped on Amazon to order a replacement.

I’ve also been working on this little area. The previous owner had all white baskets here. We decided to break up the white a bit, and I added in some pops of color. The items in the upper shelves are not staying there, so let’s just ignore that part of my photo for now 🙂

storage baskets

These are the white baskets, and these are the wicker baskets! I’m still getting organized in that space, but it’s coming along.

I’ll see you all back here tomorrow!
