I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. When I decided to start blogging again late last year, I never could have predicted what might lie ahead. But here we are, so it’s only appropriate that I fill you on what’s going on in my life.
Sawyer is our 13-year old golden retriever. And earlier last week, he just wasn’t eating like normally does. And this dog lives for food. I’ve always said that we would know something was up with him if he ever stopped eating. And, if you know me, or if you’ve read this blog for any amount of time, you know that I love the heck out of this dog.
This is so incredibly difficult to share, but Sawyer has metastatic cancer. He’s got a large mass in his chest that is pushing into his trachea. At the age of 13, we have opted not to do chemo, and Aaron, myself and are vet are all on board with that idea. We think it would only greatly diminish his quality of life. The tumor is inoperable because of where it’s located, so we have opted to put him on a steroid. Steroids have shown in several studies to potentially halt or slow the growth of these tumors.
He starts his steroid this morning, and we will continue to monitor him. He’s definitely slowed down significantly and is just not feeling himself. But, he’s still a happy guy, and he’s still alert. We’ve also started him on a diet of chicken, which he loves.
While this news is devastating to Aaron and I. If I’m honest, Sawyer is the most beloved member of our family, we are confident that we can give him a good life as long as he’ll let us.
I spent several days last week just really sad and trying to digest this news. But, Sawyer is very sensitive to my moods, and he knows when something is up. So, we need to put on our happy faces for him. I’ll keep you updated as we know more. We are committed to keeping him as healthy as possible, as happy as possible and as loved as possible.
